Humax HDR-1100S UK freesat+ receiver

The Humax HDR-1100S freesat+ receiver receives all the Freesat channels including those available in HD 1080i, but the HDMI 1.4 port will also output 1080p/50Hz even though the satellite broadcast signals are only interleaved (1080i), which is nice as some TV's suffer from picture jerkiness/judder if feed with an interlaced HDMI signal on some programming.

Our previous Sky+HD satellite receivers (500GB & 2TB models) will only output HDMI signals at a maximum resolution of 1080i/50Hz, and I've found that this causes issues with some TV's including our Samsung UE48JU6445 UHD model with picture jerkiness/judder on some TV programming, especially so on BBC HD soaps and some films that I believe is owing to the filming done in 24fps format. Whatever the reason for the picture jerkiness/judder on the Sky+HD receivers it is not an issue with the Humax HDR-1100S freesat+ receiver with the same connectivity and Samsung UHD TV.

The Humax HDR-1100S Freesat receiver has two satellite input feeds so that one can watch and record a satellite programme at the same time, or record two programmes whilst watching one that has been previously recorded or available from catchup/on demand via the Internet or media servers that are connected on the same local area network. The Humax has 802.11n dual 2.4Ghz/5Ghz wifi support and an Ethernet port for those that wish to connect the receiver to a wired connection. The Humax also supports Freetime that allows the box to be controlled remotely over the Internet so that recordings can be scheduled accordingly with a remote control app that is available for smartphones and tablets.

Catchup and on demand are available via the Internet, the Humax box has apps for BBC iPlayer, ITV, All 4, Demand 5, Netflix, YouTube, Curzon home cinema, Hamster, BBC Sport and BBC News services. The programme guide allows one to scroll forward and backwards through time by 7 days in either direction on the TV programme scheduler, it only allows scrolling back through time for TV programmes that are available via the catchup/on-demand services listed previously, and these apps automatically start when a TV programme is selected that needs to access by the Internet. The Humax also has some primitive Internet web access to wiki and some news sites, something I think most individuals will not find that useful. The Humax also found our Plex server on our local area network without issues and was able to playback films, music and programmes that we have stored on that server, even though the access to that server is very slow in comparison to Plex client app access.

Picture wise in comparison to Sky+HD satellite receivers the Humax picture is slightly better both with standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD) TV programming content, in my opinion its performance and quality is approximately 20% better than TV pictures reproduction than Sky+HD boxes in current production, including the fact that picture jerkiness/judder and lip synch issues that we did experience on the Sky+HD boxes occasionally do not trouble the Humax HDR-1100S freesat+ receiver. Sound stereo reproduction wise the Humax is miles ahead of the Sky+HD boxes sounding clearer far more dynamic and crisper than the dull sound than we experienced with our two other Sky+HD boxes, our TV is connected to a DAC Magic Plus optically and then to an Onyko stereo amplifier and Tannoy speakers in our lounge. The Humax volume level output can also be controlled by its remote control, whereas the Sky+HD boxes is fixed.

This is a very good combo receiver

The UHD HDR video colors looks much better than many of the many of the built-in DVB-T2 tuners on the TVs
